Wie had kunnen denken dat Londen aan het begin van de achttiende eeuw de hoofdstad van de Italiaanse opera zou worden? De jaren 1720 waren getuige van een koortsachtige vraag naar muziek die veel buitenlandse virtuozen ertoe bracht om naar de stad te verhuizen. Concertminnende Londenaren genoten van de laatste sonates in de stijl van de oude meester Corelli, de eerste blokfluit- en fluitconcerten en de werken van de jeugdige nieuwkomer Händel. . .
