In zijn vroege twintiger jaren richtte Nicolas Achten zijn ensemble Scherzi Musicali op waarmee hij onmiddellijk veelgeprezen en uitstekend beoordeelde opnamen uitbracht op de gerenommeerde labels Ricercar en later Alpha. Zijn tweede productie voor ALPHA deze maand is liederen van Henry Purcell. Ook hier demonstreert de jonge Belg weer zijn unieke multi-talent als ensembleleider, zanger, klavecinist en harpist.
Slechts enkele van de vele opnamen, gewijd aan Henry Purcell, zijn er in geslaagd om alle rijkdom en diversiteit van de muziekinstrumenten van de late 17e eeuw vast te leggen. Hier worden bekende stukken van Purcell op een geheel nieuwe en onverwachte manier gebracht, terwijl zij ook dienen om de theatraliteit van de vocale airs te markeren.
