Foto's op een tentoonstelling. In Memory of Viktor Hartmann.’ Moessorgski creëerde hier iets subtielers en ambivalenter dan Hartmanns schilderijen doen vermoeden. Naast de oogverblindende virtuositeit waar ze om vragen, onthult Paul Lewis' onverwachte koppeling de puur muzikale kwaliteiten van deze twee 19e-eeuwse meesterwerken.

De Engelse pianist Paul Lewis nam dit opus magnum op in zijn eigen stijl. Met ontzettend veel zorg voor het detail en voor het globale beeld. Met een zekere afgemeten reserve en toch met een sterk dynamisch verloop. Bij geen enkele andere opname hoorde ik zoveel nadruk op de scherpe bijtende dissonanten. Een goede referentie om kennis te maken met één van de sleutelstukken uit de muziekgeschiedenis.
