Symphony no. 6 'Pathetique'

Op het nieuwe album met zijn orkest MusicAeterna gaat ECHO Klassik prijswinnaar Currentzis voor de tweede keer op CD de confrontatie aan met de componist Peter Tsjaikovski. Nadat hij in 2016 samen met Patricia Kopatchinskaja een nieuw licht wierp op zijn Vioolconcert, ontdekt hij in de sombere Symfonie nr. 6 "Pathetique" ongewone, soms bleke, soms verrassend dansante tonen - of ook, wanneer nodig, aangrijpend dramatische en ontketende emotionaliteit. Een fascinerend psychogram van de late Tsjaikovski.

De eigenzinnige Griekse dirigent Teodor Currentzis kreeg het weer voor elkaar met zijn registratie van Tsjaikovski’s Zesde symfonie. The Times sprak van ‘a neurotic, spectral, thrilling suicide note’, en Trouw schreef over ‘muziek als een mokerslag in je maag’. ‘Muziek, dat zijn niet de noten die je over de stilte drapeert, maar de stilte tussen de noten in’, schreef Currentzis zelf in de liner notes. Het Siberische orkest MusicAeterna, door Currentzis opgericht, doet de rest. Tsjaikovski’s Pathétique klinkt zoals deze ongetwijfeld bedoeld is.
