KUNIKO’s fifth studio recording sees the hugely talented percussionist return to the music of Steve Reich, a composer she has championed since her debut recording in 2011.

In Drumming KUNIKO delivers a tour-de-force performance of the work which is widely considered minimalism’s first masterpiece. Performing all thirteen parts herself, and adopting the same multitrack approach which was so successful on kuniko plays reich, KUNIKO once again displays the technical virtuosity and flawless musicianship for which she is renowned.

This seminal work employs Reich’s trademark phasing technique; subtle changes in timing and timbre cause the soundscape to build through a series of rhythmic loops which gradually evolve to create a wholly immersive experience.

"Op haar nieuwste cd neemt de Japanse slagwerker Kuniko Steve Reichs Drumming (1971) onder handen. In de originele versie bespeelt een ensemble van negen slagwerkers, aangevuld met een sopraan, een alt en een piccolo, vier paar gestemde bongo’s, drie marimba’s en drie glockenspiels. Kuniko beperkt zich ditmaal tot een eenmansband bestaande uit niemand minder dan zichzelf. Met een uiterste precisie heeft ze partij na partij opgenomen en alles bovenop elkaar geplakt tot een versie van een goede zeventig minuten. Het is een procedé dat gitarist Pat Metheny in 1989 ook gebruikte voor Reichs Electric Counterpoint voor twaalf elektrische gitaren en twee elektrische bassen. Kuniko’s keus om dat met Drumming te doen is zo gek nog niet. Technisch is het een hoogstandje en misschien wel de enige benadering die het dichts bij een perfecte realisatie van de partituur komt. Het stuk bestaat uit slechts één ritmisch motief dat constant verschuift en van klankkleur verandert. Tempowisselingen, dynamische verschuivingen, stemming, balans, in Kuniko’s opname is alles secuur uitgewerkt tot op het berekenende af. Toch, hoe indrukwekkend haar prestatie ook is, het resultaat is ietwat onderkoeld. De opname mist de warme resonantie van een meerkoppig ensemble."
