Als een feniks uit de as: Janusz Wawrowskis speelt vioolconcerten van Rózycki en Tsjaikovski. Het album Phoenix brengt twee levensbevestigende vioolconcerten samen, geschreven tijdens moeilijke perioden in het leven van hun componisten: Tsjaikovski was herstellende van zijn rampzalige huwelijk en de Poolse componist Ludomir Rózycki beleefde de opstand van Warschau in 1944. Wawrowski besteedde enkele jaren aan de reconstructie van Rózycki's concert uit lang verloren gegane fragmenten. "Dit prachtige werk sprak me onmiddellijk aan ... Als een feniks uit de as moet hij herboren worden en het publiek over de hele wereld moet ervan kunnen genieten. Voor mij is het concert vol van de energie en het leven van het Warschau van voor de oorlog, en ik denk dat Rózycki probeerde die positieve energie op te roepen toen hij het in 1944 schreef ... Het doet me denken aan Gershwin of Korngold, maar heeft tegelijkertijd een uitgesproken Slavische smaak." Wawrowski wordt op deze opname begeleid door het Londens Royal Philharmonic Orchestra en zijn in Polen geboren vaste assistent-dirigent Grzegorz Nowak.

Tchaikovsky ‌[who wrote his concerto in 1878]‌ ‌is‌ ‌one‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌first‌ ‌composers‌ ‌whose‌ ‌work‌ ‌resembles‌ ‌the‌ ‌style‌ ‌of‌ ‌film‌ ‌music‌ ‌as‌ ‌we‌ ‌know‌ ‌it‌ ‌today.‌ ‌Rózycki's‌ ‌work‌ ‌reminds‌ ‌me‌ ‌of‌ ‌Gershwin‌ ‌or‌ ‌Korngold,‌ ‌with‌ ‌a‌ ‌slight‌ ‌glance‌ ‌towards‌ ‌Hollywood,‌ ‌yet‌ ‌retaining‌ ‌at‌ ‌the‌ ‌same‌ ‌time‌ ‌a‌ ‌distinct‌ ‌Slavic‌ ‌flavour.‌ ‌Rózycki‌ ‌paints‌ ‌the‌ ‌solo‌ ‌violin‌ ‌part‌ ‌against‌ ‌the‌ ‌backdrop‌ ‌of‌ ‌a‌ ‌symphony‌ ‌orchestra‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌manner‌ ‌similar‌ ‌to‌ ‌that‌ ‌of‌ ‌Tchaikovsky,‌ ‌despite‌ ‌the‌ ‌fact‌ ‌that‌ ‌he‌ ‌created‌ ‌his‌ ‌work‌ ‌65‌ ‌years‌ ‌after‌ ‌Tchaikovsky‌ ‌and‌ ‌with‌ ‌much‌ ‌broader‌ ‌orchestration‌ ‌at‌ ‌his‌ ‌disposal.” ‌ ‌

Rózycki work calls for no fewer than six percussionists and, like the Tchaikovsky, it is well suited to Wawrowski’s artistic personality: Gramophone has noted that “Wawrowski has a dark, luscious sweetness of sound, with warm vibrato,” while the Huffington Post has described him as “A virtuoso with the deep-souled tone of a poet.” He is joined for this recording by London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and its Polish-born Permanent Associate Conductor, Grzegorz Nowak.
